The Seal Project have issued an appeal to report any sightings an entangled seal to them after it was seen with plastic around it’s neck in Brixham yesterday, Sunday 5th April.

The Seal Project, who are trained and qualified volunteers, were called out by the BDMLR (British Divers Marine Life Rescue) to assess the seal last night. The seal was monitored until they lost light. The seal project returned this morning at first light, hoping the seal will be accessible today.

Updating the situation on Facebook this morning, The Seal Project said: “This morning we went out at first light and found the entangled seal. He was in the same condition as last observed the night before. He entered the water from his haul out spot around 06:30hrs and has not been observed since. We suspect he is foraging for food. We searched the area using long lenses and a drone. We will return at lunchtime to continue our search for him. Unless he is out of the water and accessible, there is little we can do except monitor his welfare. Thank you for your support and if you observe him on your walk, please let us know.”

BDMLR has been confirmed by the Principal Marine Conservation Manager at the Marine Management Organisation as providing an essential service, and therefore BDMLR volunteers are classed as key workers when attending a callout under the current circumstances. This decision was based on the Animal Welfare Act provisions and further supported by The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020, regulation 6, section 2 (f).
